What Is Nammex Cordyceps?

Cordyceps has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 3,000 years, traditionally for fatigue, general weakness, and respiratory function. The original wild species, Cordyceps sinensis, is an extremely rare parasitic fungus that grows on caterpillar larvae in the Tibetan Plateau — selling for $20,000+ per kilogram. It is impractical for supplements.

Cordyceps militaris is the cultivated alternative that research has shown contains similar active compounds and biological activities to wild C. sinensis. Critically, C. militaris produces higher concentrations of cordycepin (3’-deoxyadenosine), the primary bioactive compound unique to Cordyceps — a nucleoside analogue with broad-spectrum biological activity involved in energy metabolism at the cellular level.

Nammex cultivates their Cordyceps militaris on natural substrates (no insects) under USDA Organic and QAI certification. The fruiting bodies are hot water extracted at 90°C, spray dried, and standardized to both beta-glucans and cordycepin. Each batch is dual-tested for heavy metals, microbial contamination, and active compound verification.

Cordyceps militaris vs. Cs-4 mycelium. Many Cordyceps supplements use “Cs-4” — a mycelium product grown in fermentation tanks that was originally cultured from wild C. sinensis. The authenticity of Cs-4 is disputed: it has never produced an actual mushroom fruiting body, which is normally required for species identification. Cs-4 products also have significantly lower cordycepin content than C. militaris fruiting body extract. Our Nammex Cordyceps tested at 0.477% cordycepin — nearly 5x the specification minimum of 0.100%.

What the Research Shows

Cordycepin: The Key Compound

Cordycepin (3’-deoxyadenosine) is structurally similar to adenosine, a molecule your body uses for energy signaling and ATP production. Once inside cells, cordycepin is converted to mono-, di-, and tri-phosphate forms that interact with energy metabolism pathways. This structural similarity to adenosine is what gives Cordyceps its broad biological activity — it plugs into your body’s existing energy infrastructure.

Endurance & Oxygen Utilization

Cordyceps has been traditionally used for fatigue and respiratory function. Modern research on C. militaris suggests it may support exercise capacity by improving the efficiency of oxygen utilization during physical activity. The combination of cordycepin and beta-glucans appears to work synergistically on energy metabolism and immune function.

Immune Function

A randomized controlled clinical trial published in Scientific Reports (2024) found that healthy adults receiving a C. militaris beverage showed modulated immune responses, including effects on natural killer (NK) cell activity. Additional research has shown C. militaris supplementation can increase NK cell activity, lymphocyte proliferation, and cytokine production (IL-2, IFN-γ) compared to placebo.

Anti-Inflammatory & Antioxidant Activity

C. militaris extract has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in both in vitro and in vivo models. Research shows the extract can modulate gut microbiota composition and reduce markers of intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress, suggesting systemic protective effects beyond the immune system.

Why HYBRYD uses 2,000mg. Many Cordyceps products contain 500mg or less of unextracted powder with no cordycepin verification. At 2,000mg of hot water extracted organic fruiting body verified at 0.477% cordycepin, each serving of HYBRYD delivers approximately 9.5mg of cordycepin plus 210mg of beta-glucans from Cordyceps alone — on top of the beta-glucans from our Lion’s Mane.

Why Nammex Cordyceps Is in HYBRYD

Cordyceps fills the endurance and energy metabolism role in the HYBRYD formula. Where creatine supports explosive power through phosphocreatine stores, Cordyceps supports sustained energy output by working at the cellular level through adenosine pathways. They’re complementary systems.

We use Nammex Cordyceps militaris — not Cs-4, not generic mycelium, not unextracted powder — because the cordycepin content is verified and the biological activity is supported by the research on this specific species. At 2,000mg per serving, this is the highest dose of verified organic Cordyceps militaris extract you’ll find in a daily performance formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cordyceps militaris?

Cordyceps militaris is a species of medicinal fungus that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 3,000 years. It is the cultivated alternative to the extremely rare and expensive wild Cordyceps sinensis. Research has shown C. militaris produces similar or higher levels of the key bioactive compound cordycepin, and can be cultivated sustainably on natural substrates without insect hosts.

What is cordycepin?

Cordycepin (3’-deoxyadenosine) is the primary bioactive compound unique to Cordyceps species. It is a nucleoside analogue structurally similar to adenosine, which your body uses for energy signaling and ATP production. Cordycepin has been studied for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and energy-supporting properties. C. militaris fruiting bodies contain significantly more cordycepin than other Cordyceps species.

What is the difference between Cordyceps militaris and Cs-4?

Cs-4 is a mycelium product grown in liquid fermentation tanks, originally cultured from wild C. sinensis. Its identity is disputed — it has never produced an actual mushroom fruiting body, which is normally required for species verification. C. militaris is a fully cultivated mushroom species with verified identity, higher cordycepin content, and a growing body of clinical research. Nammex uses only C. militaris fruiting bodies.

How much Cordyceps is in HYBRYD?

2,000mg of Nammex organic Cordyceps militaris fruiting body extract per serving. No proprietary blends. The amount is listed on the label and verified by third-party testing showing 10.5% beta-glucans and 0.477% cordycepin.

Why is the Cordyceps sourced from China?

China is the global center of Cordyceps cultivation and has been using this mushroom medicinally for millennia. Nammex works with certified organic producers deep in mountain regions of China. All production is under USDA Organic certification enforced by QAI, with dual testing at production and by third-party labs.

Where can I buy Nammex Cordyceps?

Nammex supplies raw organic mushroom extracts to supplement brands worldwide. HYBRYD contains 2,000mg per serving alongside five other clinically dosed ingredients. Try it through our 5-day trial for $15 with free shipping.
