What Is Nammex Lion’s Mane?

Nammex is a British Columbia-based company founded by Jeff Chilton, who has over 40 years of experience in mushroom cultivation. In 1996, Chilton organized the first certified organic mushroom extract production in China — where over 90% of the world’s mushrooms are grown and where cultivation practices date back to the 1200s.

Nammex Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) extract is produced exclusively from the fruiting body — the actual mushroom. It is hot water extracted at 90°C and spray dried, then standardized to a minimum of 30% beta-(1,3)(1,6)-glucans, the primary bioactive compound responsible for immune modulation and the compounds studied for cognitive support.

Every batch is dual-tested: once at the production facility and again by a third-party laboratory, screening for heavy metals, agricultural chemicals, and microbial contamination. All extracts are QAI-certified USDA Organic.

Fruiting body vs. mycelium: why it matters. Most Lion’s Mane supplements on the market aren’t made from mushrooms at all. They use mycelium grown on grain — the root-like structure of the fungus cultivated on rice or oat substrate. The problem: the mycelium can’t be separated from the grain, so the final product is largely starch with minimal active compounds. Independent analysis has shown these products contain high alpha-glucans (starch) and low beta-glucans (the actual bioactive). Nammex uses 100% fruiting body and tests specifically for beta-glucans, not polysaccharides, to prevent starch from inflating potency numbers.

What the Research Shows

Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) Support

Lion’s Mane contains unique compounds called hericenones (found in the fruiting body) and erinacines (found in the mycelium) that have been studied for their ability to stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF) — a protein essential for the growth, maintenance, and survival of nerve cells. Hericenones are only present in the fruiting body, which is why extract source matters.

Cognitive Function

Research in adults with mild memory problems associated with aging found that those taking Lion’s Mane mushroom powder showed improved memory function compared with control participants. The compounds responsible appear to work by supporting the brain’s own neuroplasticity mechanisms rather than acting as a stimulant.

Immune Modulation

Beta-glucans from mushroom fruiting bodies have a unique branched molecular structure with both 1,3 and 1,6 linkages that interact with immune cell receptors. This is structurally distinct from beta-glucans found in oats or yeast, and is the basis for mushroom beta-glucans’ studied immunomodulatory properties.

Why HYBRYD uses 1,500mg. Many Lion’s Mane products contain 250-500mg of unextracted powder with unknown beta-glucan content. At 1,500mg of hot water extracted fruiting body verified at 37.58% beta-glucans, each serving of HYBRYD delivers approximately 563mg of actual beta-glucans from Lion’s Mane alone.

Why Nammex Lion’s Mane Is in HYBRYD

Lion’s Mane fills the cognitive support role in the HYBRYD formula. Where caffeine gives you acute alertness and Rhodiola builds stress resilience, Lion’s Mane supports the underlying neural infrastructure — the nerve growth and maintenance that sustains cognitive performance over months and years of consistent use.

We use Nammex because they are the industry standard for verified mushroom quality. When Jeff Chilton started testing mushroom supplements on the market, he found that many products labeled as “Lion’s Mane” contained primarily grain starch with negligible beta-glucans. Nammex developed the analytical methods now being adopted by commercial labs and standards organizations to solve this problem. Their testing fingerprint is becoming the benchmark for the category.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between fruiting body and mycelium Lion’s Mane?

The fruiting body is the actual mushroom — the part that grows above the substrate and has been consumed for thousands of years. It contains hericenones and high levels of beta-glucans. Mycelium is the root-like structure, typically grown on grain. The mycelium cannot be separated from the grain substrate, so the final product is largely starch. Independent analysis shows mycelium-on-grain products have low beta-glucan content and high starch content.

How much Lion’s Mane is in HYBRYD?

1,500mg of Nammex organic Lion’s Mane fruiting body extract per serving. This is not a proprietary blend. The amount is stated on the label and verified by third-party testing.

What are beta-glucans?

Beta-glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides found in mushroom cell walls. Mushroom beta-glucans have a unique branched structure with 1,3 and 1,6 linkages that interact with immune cell receptors. They are structurally different from beta-glucans in oats or yeast. Nammex tests specifically for beta-glucans using the Megazyme enzymatic method rather than total polysaccharides, which can be inflated by starch from grain substrates.

Why is the Lion’s Mane sourced from China?

China produces over 90% of the world’s mushrooms and has cultivated them since the 1200s. Nammex works with certified organic growers deep in Chinese mountain regions using traditional cultivation practices on natural substrates. The mushrooms are grown under USDA Organic certification enforced by QAI. Mushroom cultivation for supplements in North America is rare and significantly more expensive without quality advantages.

How long does it take for Lion’s Mane to work?

Lion’s Mane is not a stimulant — you won’t feel an immediate effect. The compounds that support nerve growth factor production work gradually with consistent daily use. Most research protocols use 4-16 weeks of supplementation to measure cognitive outcomes. This is why it’s included in a daily formula rather than sold as a one-time product.

Where can I buy Nammex Lion’s Mane?

Nammex supplies raw ingredients to supplement brands including Real Mushrooms, Nootropics Depot, and others. HYBRYD is one of the only daily performance formulas that includes a full 1,500mg clinical dose of Nammex Lion’s Mane alongside five other active ingredients. Try it through our 5-day trial for $15 with free shipping.
